Before you begin an abs training routine or diet, it is important that you learn how the abdominal muscles work and what they respond to. Different exercises work different areas and you should know which exercises to do to burn the most fat.

Muscles to Work

When you do sit-ups and crunches, you are working the largest abs muscles in your body that also flex your spine. These muscles contract the abdomen up to a certain amount. Although these muscles are important to work out, you must focus on other areas as well.

These muscles on the sides of your abs are called the internal and external obliques. When you move sideways or twist your body at the waist, the obliques are worked. They contract and the muscles are engaged. With that being said, you want to work on these muscles just as much as your other muscle areas in the abdomen. Twisting when you do crunches are good flab reducing techniques, just be careful of your form to not injure your back.

The lower abs are a problem area for women post-pregnancy. Raising your legs while doing crunches will work these abdominal muscles and should be done repeatedly for maximum effect. Other Exercises

Walking or running works all of your abdominal muscles which are really the best exercise for the abs. Swinging your arms while running and contracting your abdomen will help to work these muscles. Be sure to drink plenty of water to keep yourself hydrating. Running or doing a swift walk everyday will help you to lose weight and tone your abdominal area.

Exercise with Care

Just with any exercise, you should perform abdominal exercises with care. If you have back problems, you may want to consult your doctor before you begin any hardcore ab work out. Without proper form, you could injure your back and neck and be out of commission for awhile.

Changing up your routine as well as watching what you eat will help you to achieve and maintain great abs. Being consistent with your exercise on a daily basis will help you to build a solid and easy routine. If you feel as though your workouts are giving you a challenge anymore, try stepping it up by adding resistance bands or weights to challenge yourself. There are many ways to work your abs, and its not just through sit-ups. Keeping yourself abreast of all new techniques and exercises will help to keep you moving with exercise.
