Are you ready to lose fat, build muscle, and get into the best shape of your life? Your first question should be, “Why am I going to listen to you?”

I’m not a bodybuilder. I’m not a sensational athlete. Quite honestly, I don’t look all that lean and fit. You need to start at the beginning of my journey to see why this advice can help you.

When I started on a program to lose weight, gain muscle, and improve my health I weighed almost 300 pounds. Life was getting scary. Being just over 40 years old, and having a Doctor give you the Change Now or Die speech is terrifying. I listened, and I took action.

In less than 1 year I went from being 295 pounds down to 215 pounds. During this time I increased my muscle mass by almost 15 pounds. Stop and think about that for just a moment. I didn’t just lose 80 pounds of fat, I lost 95 pounds of fat.

When I received the ultimatum from the Doctor I could hardly walk a mile at a decent pace. It was a big effort, and when I finished I was breathing hard. 1 year later, I was walking 5 miles a day, hitting weights 45 minutes 3 days a week, and pedaling the heck out of an exercise bike 30 minutes, 3 days a week.

I changed everything in the way I took care of my body. I learned the proper way to eat to lose fat, gain muscle, and improve my cardiovascular fitness at the same time. I knew from reading two of my heroes it was not an option to just diet. If you want to lose weight successfully and change your life you must increase your muscle mass at the same time.

Only by gaining muscle, and putting your metabolism on overdrive can you really succeed in the game of changing your body.

While one of my heroes recommended using supplements, the second one recommended a completely natural way to eat. When you read between the lines, you could see they were both on the same page. You need a balanced, planned diet to succeed. It must have the proper balance of protein, carbohydrates, and fats to succeed.

I chose the path of eating naturally because it saved me money, and simply made sense.

The greatest things in learning how lose weight, gain muscle, and transform my body was the change in my levels of energy, my attitude towards life, and in my confidence. Suddenly people were complimenting me on my changes. Often it had nothing to do with my body, but with my change in life.

Both of my heroes taught me one critical lesson, which they covered immediately in their training. GET YOUR MIND RIGHT. Without defined goals, and getting a burning desire to succeed, you won’t make the effort to achieve your goals.

I use their advice on setting goals, mental conditioning, and planning in most areas of my life today. These two sets of broad shoulders will continue to be my heroes for the rest of my life.
